Purchase cost

How to use

  1. Choose individual surfaces or a rectangular room. A surface can use length × width or a known area. For a room, select the floor, four walls, or both.
  2. Add doors, windows or other areas that will not be tiled. Keep every deduction within the total measured area.
  3. Enter the actual tile dimensions and the number of tiles in a box. Check that the calculated box coverage agrees with the manufacturer’s label.
  4. Set an allowance, then enter a quoted price per box, per tile, per square metre or per square foot. Your price basis is independent of the measurement system.
  5. Review the whole-box purchase quantity. Copy, save or print the estimate to take with you.

Switching Metric/US converts dimensions while keeping the same physical measurements. Currency changes the label for your entered prices; it does not convert money.

Calculation method

For rectangles, area is length × width × quantity. A rectangular room’s wall area is 2 × (length + width) × height. The floor is length × width.

  • Net area = total surface area − deductions.
  • Target area = net area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100).
  • Tile area = tile length × tile width.
  • Tiles needed = target area ÷ tile area, rounded up.
  • Boxes to buy = tiles needed ÷ tiles per box, rounded up.

The purchase cost uses the full quantity bought. With area pricing, it uses the area of every tile in the purchased boxes, rather than only your measured surface. Values are kept at full precision during calculation; displayed measurements are rounded.

A worked example

A 5 × 4 m floor has an area of 20 m². With 10% extra, the target is 22 m². A 600 × 600 mm tile covers 0.36 m².

Dividing 22 by 0.36 gives about 61.11, so the estimate needs 62 tiles. At 4 tiles per box, buy 16 boxes, containing 64 tiles and covering 23.04 m². At 24 USD per box, the purchase cost is 384 USD.

These are example inputs, not current market prices or a recommended allowance for every installation.

Understanding your result

“Tiles needed” includes your allowance. “Tiles in full boxes” includes the extra tiles introduced by box rounding. “Purchased tile area” may therefore be higher than “Area with allowance”.

This is an area-based estimate for one product, not an installation layout or cut optimiser. It does not model grout joints, the direction of a pattern, unusable cut pieces or the position of openings. A floor and walls using different tiles need separate estimates. Adhesive, grout, labour, tax and delivery are excluded.

For an irregular space, divide it into rectangles and avoid overlapping measurements. Read the tile measuring and waste guide for ways to check a shopping quantity against a planned layout.
