Measuring solid volumes without double counting

Practical measurement and product-data checks for the volume calculator, with clear distinctions between net quantities, allowances and purchase amounts.

Start with non-overlapping solids

Sketch the object or excavation and split it into shapes with clear boundaries. In the volume calculator, Add and Subtract change arithmetic only; they do not check spatial positions. An overlapping part can be counted twice unless you correct it.

Check every dimension’s unit

Length may be in metres while height is in centimetres. The tool supports a unit selector for each dimension. It stores physical values internally, so changing a selector converts the shown number instead of changing the object’s size.

For a triangular prism, use the triangle’s perpendicular height, not the length of a sloping side. For a cylinder, the input is diameter, not radius.

Separate volume from material behavior

Geometric volume does not tell you the mass without density. Excavated and loose material may also occupy different volumes. Use the gravel calculator when you have suitable bulk density and a chosen compaction allowance; use the concrete calculator for concrete bag yields or ready-mix orders.

Confirm ordering rules

An allowance changes the target volume. An order increment rounds it to a purchasable multiple. Neither one represents delivery, a minimum charge or a truckload automatically. Keep those commercial conditions separate from the geometric estimate.
