Break-even sales: contribution, fixed costs and whole units

Break-even sales: contribution, fixed costs and whole units. Learn which inputs matter, follow a practical example and understand the limits of the break-even calculator.

Contribution pays for the operating period

Break-even is easier to interpret when the unit and time period are explicit. A café could model one standard order; a maker could model one product; a service business could model one fixed-scope job. The selling price and variable cost must refer to that same unit.

Contribution is the amount left from each unit to pay fixed costs. It is not automatically net profit. In the break-even calculator, a price of 50 and variable cost of 30 produce 20 contribution per unit. Fixed costs of 5,000 then require 250 units before the model reaches zero profit.

Match fixed costs to the period

A monthly rent amount belongs with other monthly fixed expenses and a monthly sales plan. An annual amount needs an annual plan. The period selector cannot know which costs recur or how they should be allocated, so it changes the report label only.

Some costs are neither purely fixed nor smoothly variable. A second shift, extra storage or a new machine can create a step increase. Model a separate scenario when the operating setup changes rather than extending the original straight-line result indefinitely.

Compare a threshold with a feasible plan

The theoretical threshold may contain a fraction of a sale. If you need 50.05 units, fifty sales are insufficient and fifty-one cross the line. The tool shows both the mathematical intersection and the whole-unit quantity so that the resulting small positive profit is understandable.

A target profit asks how much volume would be needed under the assumptions. It does not show whether customers will buy that volume or whether the business has the capacity to produce it. Enter a realistic planned quantity to see the gap between an arithmetic target and an operating plan.

Recheck costs before changing prices

Use the margin and markup calculator to inspect a proposed price. Where a selling platform charges multiple fees, the Etsy fee calculator can help itemize one modeled order. Keep those cost definitions consistent when transferring amounts into a break-even scenario.
