Paving project
1Project areas

Example inputs are editable. Split an L-shaped project into non-overlapping rectangles. Each exclusion removes pavers and both underlying layers.

Areas are added independently; their positions relative to each other are not inferred. Do not count the same ground twice.

2Paving product

Use 0 if your entered dimensions already include the joint module. The diagram is illustrative.

From the selected product.

Use manufacturer’s installed coverage, including its stated joint allowance. Do not add joints again.

Used in the layer section only; not a structural recommendation.

For cuts and breakage. No automatic pattern waste.

One product for all areas. Size mode uses an area/module estimate, not a cutting plan. Use pack coverage for mixed-size kits or interlocking shapes.

3Aggregate base

Editable example. Confirm the layer specification for your site.

Optional supplier value. Example: 1.25 means 25% more loose volume; not 25% Proctor compaction.

Additional handling/spillage allowance; applied once after the volume conversion.

Density of the same dry loose material being ordered. Needed for mass and bag quantities.

From the supplier. Density is also needed to convert the layer volume into bags.

4Bedding sand

Volume before seating / compaction of pavers; separate from joint sand.

Additional handling/spillage allowance; applied once after the volume conversion.

Density of the same dry loose material being ordered. Needed for mass and bag quantities.

From the supplier. Density is also needed to convert the layer volume into bags.

5 · Optional material prices

Currency changes the label, not the exchange rate. Costs use purchase quantities. Blank means unpriced; 0 means free.

How to use

  1. Add non-overlapping rectangular areas and any positioned rectangular exclusions. Use one paver product and layer specification per estimate.
  2. Choose unit dimensions and joint width, or enter product pack coverage. Set the paver allowance and whether whole packs must be purchased.
  3. Enable base and bedding sand as needed. Enter depths and any required loose-volume factor, density or bag mass for the selected purchase method.
  4. Inspect each material separately. Enter its correct price basis and keep missing quantities or prices visibly unknown.

Calculation method

Net area subtracts exclusions from the included rectangles. Paver size mode uses the repeating face module, including the selected joint, to derive a unit estimate; pack mode uses entered label coverage. Allowance and whole-unit or pack rounding determine the purchase. Base and bedding each use net area × entered depth, followed by their own stated loose-volume or allowance assumptions. Density converts volume to mass only when supplied; bag ordering also requires bag mass. Costs use the relevant complete purchase quantities.

Worked example

A 4 × 3 m net paving area is 12 m². With a label coverage of 2 m² per pack and a 10% paver allowance, the 13.2 m² target requires seven packs, supplying 14 m². Independently, a 100 mm compacted base is 1.2 m³ geometrically and a 25 mm bedding layer is 0.3 m³. These layer volumes do not establish the loose aggregate order unless the applicable conversion inputs are supplied.

Assumptions and limits

The same layers apply to every area; exclusions remove all included layers. The tool does not optimize paving patterns, design loading capacity, drainage, falls or excavation, or add edge restraints, geotextile and jointing material. Bedding sand and jointing sand are separate uses. Different products or layer specifications need separate estimates.

Continue your plan

Check the footprint with the area calculator, compare aggregate ordering in the gravel calculator, or calculate separate poured elements with the concrete calculator.

Copy, download or print a valid result to keep the inputs with the estimate. Currency selections label your prices; they do not apply an exchange rate. Product-dependent examples should be replaced with data for the material or equipment you actually use.
